Germany prepares first fuel price cap bill

Germany’s economy ministry has drafted legislation allowing a fuel price cap only in an extreme emergency. The cap would apply only if petrol and diesel price increases each exceed the average for other EU countries by more than five percentage points for three consecutive weeks.

It would last no more than three months. Its application could be suspended if security of supply is threatened.

The draft is at the first stage of coordination within the federal government.
